I’m back! One
year and 25 days later (or 3 posts later, really, just 3 posts? Damn Kelvz! Write
more!) I’m back with the 2014 edition of the Top Beats!
Now just like last
year, the following are my top 20
most played songs for 2014. Remember that it is not a "best songs of 2014" list. So I
grabbed my phone and looked at the top played tracks. To not make this
list a long one, I would just link you to a YouTube video of the entries for
songs 20 to 11, but for entries 10 to 1, I'd post the video directly here. Last
year the list was dominated by OPM songs, as 14 of the 20 entries were from
local artists. Will we see yet another OPM domination? Let's begin!
Let’s start
this on a happy note! Happy by Pharrell Williams makes it to the list as our
number 20 song. Thanks to the Minions and Despicable Me 2 for introducing me to
this song. And doesn’t it really make you the bit more happy by just listening
to it?
LSS Line: “Clap along if you feel like happiness is the
truth”
Taylor Swift!
Two for two so far for foreign artists. While Shake It Off is not the usual
Taylor Swift song (i.e. songs that are full of “hugot”), I like Shake It Off
because it is an upbeat song. I suspect that the reason that it is here is
because we used Shake It Off as one of the songs in our team’s performance during
last year’s company year-end party.
LSS Line: “That's
what people say mmm, that's what people say mmm..”
Most of your
probably are not familiar with this song, but our first OPM song is brought to
you by the band Paramita. Kung ang Shake
It Off ay walang hugot, ang Takipsilim ay puro hugot! This most likely is
the least known of all the songs in this list, so I advise you to check it out.
LSS Line: “Aaminin
ko na ang buhay ko, ay walang kulay kung 'di dahil sa 'yo”
OPM makes it
two in a row with a Sugarfree song! It’s been years since Sugarfree disbanded,
and while Ebe is still active in the industry (and isn’t shying away from
performing Sugarfree songs), but their songs still feel like they were just
released yesterday. Prom is their de-facto concert opener. Most probably would
also be their opening song in a reunion concert in the future.
LSS Line: “Parang atin ang gabi, para bang wala tayong katabi..”
Tabi as performed by Paraluman with Kean of Callalily is one of those songs that manage to always enter whatever playlist I create. It’s a simple yet beautiful song. How I wish one day I could sing this song with someone who is by my side. (Yiii!)
LSS Line: “Naranasan mo na bang madapa at masugatan?”
Entries 15th onwards after the jump!
The 2nd
Sugarfree song enters the list at number 15! Makita Kang Muli was recorded by
Sugarfree as the OST for the ABS-CBN show Panday. While most of the time that
would mean that a song would be cheesy and boring, Makita Kang Muli actually
feels like a legit Sugarfree song. It’s as if you could put this song into any
of their albums and you wouldn’t notice much difference.
LSS Line: “Pagkat
sa isang taong mahal mo, ng buong puso, lahat ay gagawin..”
We have our 5th
straight OPM entry courtesy of Kikomachine’s Michikot! I just absolutely love
the drums at the beginning of the song. Earlier I said that Takipsilim could be
the least known song in the list, but I think Michikot might actually contend
for the distinction. So I suggest you click on the link and give it a go. That
drum intro would really get you pumped up!
LSS Line: “Pag-ibig
nating parang auto..”
Thanks a lot
to Star Lord and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Blue Swede’s Hooked
on a Feeling was a constant in my playlist. The simplest way to describe this
song is that it got me hooked to it.
LSS Line: “I
can’t stop this feeling, deep inside of me..”
Probably the
most famous Gloc 9 song, Simpleng Tao makes an appearance at number 12. I’m
actually surprised it wasn’t in last year’s list. Heck, I’m actually surprised
it did not reach the top 10. Nonetheless, I suspect that Simpleng Tao would
continue to be one of the most played tracks in my phone.
LSS Line: “Kay
spiderman o kay batman, kay superman o wolverine..”
Silent
Sanctuary failed to enter last year’s list, but they do make it this year!
Bumalik Ka Na Sakin actually did great making it to the 11th spot
considering that I only started listening to this song late last year. But I
still can’t wrap my head around an 8-track full length album. Sorry Silent, I
still love the band though (and I just bought their original album, so support
OPM guys!)
LSS Line: “Sige
na please, wag ka ng mainis, bumalik ka na sakin.”
10.) Thinking
Out Loud
Just as
suspected, Thinking Out Loud does indeed make the list. Overrated? Cliché? Gasgas na? I don’t care. I think this is
the only Ed Sheeran song that I know, so give this one to me, okay folks? (But still, really Ed? Hanggang 70 lang? Wala talagang forever no?)
LSS Line: “..and
darling I will be loving you till we’re 70.”
9.) Bakit Pt.
2 (2014)
Mayonnaise!
Monty! Bakit Part 2! 2014! So Mayonnaise remade Bakit Part 2 with a 2014
version. Still has that angst of the first version, but has a fresh feel to the
song. The best thing about this 2014 version? I now have three version of Bakit
Pt.2 to listen to! *Cue Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare!*
LSS Line: “Oh bakit ba, pag wala ka na, ako’y kulang?”
8.) Dati
Ladies and
gentlemen, a Sam Concepcion song made the list! Dati by Sam Concepcion and
Tippy Dos Santos featuring Quest has a nice beat to it, a light song, and is
perfect LSS material.
LSS Line: “Da-da-da-da-dati…da-da-da-da-dati..”
7.) My Song
Know What You Did In The Dark
A Fall Out
Boy song! This has the feel of a superhero/anime opening song, and wouldn’t you
know, it is used as Big Hero 6’s OST. After all these years, FOB still churns
out kick-ass songs!
LSS Line: “My
song know what you did in the daaaark..”
6.) Centuries
Back to back
FOB songs! That’s all.
LSS Line: “And
you will remember me, remember me for centuries!”
5.) Mariposa
And we enter
the top 5 and start it off with another Sugarfree classic! From their debut
album, Sa Wakas, Mariposa is one of my all time favorite tracks. Sugarfree just
have a long list of timeless classics. I really can’t wait for that reunion
concert. It’s bound to happen sometime in the future, right? Right?
LSS Line: “Ayoko
ng mag-isa, ayoko na mag-isa, ayoko na mag-isa, ayoko na, na, na, na.”
4.) Come and
Get Your Love
Another song makes the list thanks to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Is it obvious that I absolutely loved that movie? Chris Pratt is awesome. Anyway, this Redbone song is an absolute joy to listen to. Then you skip around like Star Lord in the opening scenes of the GotG movie, and you wish you have a lizard like creature to use as a microphone.
LSS Line: “Come
and get your love!”
3.) Ipagpatawad
Mo
Mayonnaise again appears in the list. I know this is just a revival, and not many would probably like how the cover sounded, but hey, this works for me, and I absolutely love it when you can just feel the emotions flowing out of the song. The intensity of the song is just off the charts. I wish I could perform this song (among others) live someday.
LSS Line: “Minahal agad kita…”
2.) 1995
We have an
Eraserheads song that is not a decade old! 1995 was release around September of
last year together with the special issue of the Esquire magazine, and after
all these years, the ‘Heads are still making beautiful music. You know I am a
big Eraserheads fan when a song that came out late 2014 still is the 2nd
most played song in my phone.
Fun Fact (sorta):
The original idea was not to record new songs, but to revive the whole
Ultraelectromagneticpop album. I’d like to go to an alternate universe just to
hear that album.
LSS Line: “At
kung hindi naman sayo, ay wag mong angkinin…dyan ka magaling..”
1.)
Tadhana
And the number 1 most played song in my playlists for 2014 is Up Dharma Down’s Tadhana! Let me shut up now and let’s just listen to the brilliance that is Up Dharma Down.
LSS Line: “ ‘Bat
di pa sabihin ang hindi mo maamin? Ipauubaya na lang ba to sa hangin?”
P.S. Suportahan natin ang OPM! Buy original CDs only. ;)
