Rewind: Top Beats for 2013

"Why do you listen to that crap?"

Thankfully, no one has ever asked me that. I listen to a lot and various music, so who's to say that I won't be on the receiving end of that question? Anyway, this post is not exactly about that. But it is about music.

2013 has just ended and we are now on the 2nd day of 2014. Then I wondered, what did I listen to the most the past year? So I grabbed my phone and looked at the top played tracks. It actually works very nicely because I just got my phone early 2013, so all of the play count accumulated is from 2013 only.

The following are my top 20 most played songs for 2013. Remember that it is not a "best songs of 2013" list. To not make this list a long one, I would just link you to a YouTube video of the entries for songs 20 to 11, but for entries 10 to 1, I'd post the video directly here. Let's begin!

20.) I Won't Give Up

Jason Mraz' I Won't Give Up sneaks in at number 20. I say sneak in because I could still clearly remember I just started listening to this song around October, effectively giving most of the other songs at least a half year head start. Then again, I probably shouldn't be surprised, as I Won't Give Up is definitely one of my favorite songs right now. It just seems to...fit. :)

19.) Crazy For You

As performed by New Found Glory, not by Spongecola, let's just get that out of the way to begin with. Not that I have anything against Spongecola mind you. This is a song that I can say I am actually surprised to be here. I don't really remember listening to this song that much at all, but eh, stranger things have happened.

18.) Makapiling Ka

Told you I have nothing against Spongecola. I do wonder if this is the only song by Spongecola that made the list. That being said, "Pagmulat, ikaw pa rin ang hinahanap sa umaga." I must say, this is one of the best Spongecola songs from their later albums.

17.) After All This Time

If there is one song that I would bet would reach the top 10 of this list, it would be After All This Time by the Itchyworms. I just absolutely love this song since the first time I heard them play it live when they launched the song during the Roots-UP Fair 2013. Lovely melody, marvelous lyrics (though I do not relate to it, if you're wondering about that). Seriously, give it a try. You'd love it. Plus, the music video is also great, to say the least.

16.) Wag Ka Nang Umiyak

Another one of those "I could have sworn this would be a top 10 song" songs, Wag Ka Nang Umiyak by Sugarfree is just one very beautiful and heartfelt song. Now this is a song that I would sing. While it may not have made my top 10 songs for 2013, I'm betting that this is a song that would constantly be among my most played songs for the foreseeable future. That's how much I love this song. And is it just me or do all great songs just have equally great music videos?

Entries 15th onwards after the jump!

15.) Tindahan ni Aling Nena

And here we are with Eraserhead's first appearance in this list; yes, I am assuming that the Heads would have multiple entries in here. Having said that, I wouldn't have guessed that Tindahin ni Aling Nena would be among the EHeads songs that makes the cut. But hey, it's a fun, upbeat song. And everyone needs such songs from time to time, agree? :)

14.) What A Catch, Donnie

Fall Out Boy makes the list with this song. Upon seeing it, I already know the reason why this song is in my top played songs, and it is the closing part of the song. If you don't know the song, listen to it so that you'll know what I mean.

13.) Liwanag Sa Dilim

Another OPM song, that is five OPM songs among the first eight. This time we have a song from Rivermaya. It's just one of those songs that kinda uplifts your spirit, doesn't it? Very catchy too. Probably one of the most recognizable songs from the Rico Blanco-fronted-'Maya songs.

12.) Masaya

A song from the debut album of Bamboo, As The Music Plays. I really can't say much anymore. (I wasn't expecting to see this song here, I'm sorry okay!)

11.) Your Song

Chito has finally made it clear what the title of this Parokya Ni Edgar song really is during the Inuman Sessions 2, and it is Your Song. Watch the linked video of Parokya performing this live, and I must say it is just much better with the little bit of "umph" added at the end. Just kinda drives in the point more. It is just simply a song that "I find myself coming back to".

10.) Ikaw Pala

Sugarfree makes another appearance on the list, this time with the not-so-commercially-famous-but-still-a-very-great-song in Ikaw Pala. I have recommended this song to a lot of people and they all gave positive feedback upon listening to the song. Lend your ears to this track if you may, I'm sure you'd like it. For all of the people that looked or waited for "the one" even once in their life would surely relate to this song somehow.

9.) Yellow

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.
My favorite Coldplay song, and it doesn't surprise me that it is in the top 10. I think that is enough of an explanation on why this song made it this far. Also just the fourth non-OPM song in the list,
You know I love you so, you know I love you so.

8.) Pano Nangyari Yun

Monty! Mayonnaise lands at number 8. Seriously, I was expecting Synesthesia to be the Mayonnaise song to appear here, but hey, I love surprises! As to the song, let me just leave you with a line from it:
Mahal na kita, nung unang beses kong nakita, ang iyong mga mata, na kumikinang sa ganda.

7.) UP Naming Mahal

Yep, you are not mistaken, I have this song in my phone. I just love listening to our university hymn whenever I need to pump myself up. It just works for me for some reason.

Fun fact! During my graduation day back in April 2013, I used this song as my 'alarm tone'. So when my phone started ringing to wake myself up for Graduation Day, I woke up to the sound of my Alma Mater's hymn.

UP naming mahal indeed!

6.) Hinahanap-hanap Kita

Hinahanap-hanap kita just misses the top 5 and settles for the 6th spot instead. Note however that the song that made my top played list is not the original Rivermaya version, but rather the live performance by Bamboo, as shown in the video above. I don't think there is much difference though, except for the "Adik sayo!" part at the start.

On second thought, there is indeed some difference there. Eh, I'm no music expert. Shoot me.

5.) First of Summer

The one and only song from Urbandub opens our top 5! What I remember the most about this song is just how awesome it is to be in the crowd while Urbandub is performing this live, specially at the point where the crowd sings in unison, "Our song, plays on."

4.) Para sa Masa

Told ya there would be yet another Eraserheads song in this list! But boy oh boy, I wouldn't have expected it to be Para sa Masa. One of the laters songs by the Heads, most people listen to the song and hear the band talking about the state of the 'masa' in the country and how the song is dedicated to them. Some say however, that it is more about the state of OPM in the country, and how the EHeads tried to make it better by "sinubok kong iayos ka, pero ayaw mo naman sumama."

3.) All My Life

K-Ci & JoJo's All My Life is my third most played song for 2013. This song, which is a staple for weddings, was something that I just accidentally discovered. I remember I heard it on the radio on my way to Manila, and just wrote part of the lyrics in my arm, then searched the net for the song upon reaching our home. And then, as they say, the rest was history.

2.) The Avengers

The OST from Marvel's 2012 blockbuster movie, The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble, as it is technically called) can be summed up in one word.

EPIC.

1.) Truth

Bamboo claims the top spot for my most played song for 2013 with Truth! Now this is not a surprising result at all, Truth is a song that I indeed listen to a lot of times. I can even remember where it all began.

I was watching the blind auditions of The Voice of the Philippines, and a contestant sang Truth. I instantly knew from the opening notes that it was a Bamboo song, and it was confirmed as they showed Bamboo's reaction. I vaguely remember the lyrics of the song back then, but I knew that I really like the song. So I searched for the title of it, added the song to my phone, and boom, you end up being numero uno in this list.

So how many of these songs do you also listen to? What are your most played songs for 2013? Hit the comments and let me know! :)
